About Scarlett
I’m Scarlett Huang, an LA-based product designer interested in Human-Computer Interaction and how human behavior, technology, and design come together to shape everyday experiences. I enjoy turning complex systems into clear, intuitive products through research, prototyping, and hands-on exploration.
Outside of design, I spend a lot of time working with ceramics, taking photos, traveling, and occasionally getting involved in theater arts. These interests constantly influence how I see materials, storytelling, and human interaction. Whether I’m shaping clay, capturing moments through a lens, or designing a product, I’m always curious about how objects and experiences can feel more meaningful, expressive, and human.

Photography
Photography is an important way I observe and document everyday life. I use a range of cameras—from CCD point-and-shoots to DSLRs and film—to capture small moments around me, from food and landscapes to animals and still-life scenes. For me, photography is both a way to preserve memories and a practice of noticing light, composition, and the quiet details of daily life.

Traveling
Travel is an important way I understand the world and my place within it. I grew up in Shenzhen, a fast-paced international metropolis, and later became an international student in Los Angeles—two cities that shaped how I see culture, movement, and connection. I have traveled across different regions of China and to places around the world, exploring both natural landscapes and human environments. For me, traveling is not just about movement, but about observing how people live, how cultures express themselves, and how environments influence behavior—insights that continue to inform my perspective as a designer.

Theater has always been an important part of how I understand storytelling and human expression. I served as a stage director in high school, and worked extensively backstage across sound, lighting, and set design—experiences that taught me how every detail contributes to a cohesive performance. In my free time, I continue to visit theaters, watching a wide range of performances from traditional Chinese dance to Mandarin plays and Broadway musicals. For me, theater is not just entertainment, but a form of cultural immersion and inspiration, shaping how I think about emotion, atmosphere, and the way experiences are carefully constructed.

Ceramics
Ceramics is an important part of my creative practice and a medium through which I explore material, form, and process. During the summer after my first year, I spent time in Jingdezhen studying ceramics, where I learned about clay, glaze, and color, as well as hands-on techniques like wheel throwing and hand building. I found the process both magical and calming—there is something powerful about how raw clay can be shaped and transformed through touch and time. Developing this skill has been deeply rewarding, and ceramics has since become a meaningful part of my artistic expression. I also take pride in engaging with and continuing a rich tradition within Chinese craftsmanship.
